Portsmouth's a top 10 city

IBM offices Portsmouth's top councillor has hailed an economic report which says the city is one of the fastest growing in Britain.

The report says Portsmouth is the 10th fastest-growing large city. It is ahead of Southampton, Brighton, Birmingham and Manchester - and only just behind London and Edinburgh.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: "This national report confirms what we already knew - that the city really is going places.

"Recent developments like Gunwharf Quays have brought new vitality to the city. We have secured the naval base's future and some of the country's top hi-tech companies have operations here, like IBM and EADS Astrium. The university is also a massive asset.

"It's good to know that hard-headed accountants are recognising our achievements and the way the city is developing."

The report, by accountancy group UHY Hacker Young, ranks the UK's 30 largest cities by their gross value added (GVA) and their growth over the past 10 years.

GVA is used to estimate the value of goods and services produced in an area to measure its contribution the overall UK economy.

According to the report, Portsmouth has a GVA of £19,359 per head, up 73.2% in 10 years.
