Join the great Portsmouth 'Team Read'
This year's summer reading challenge - Team Read - is launched on Saturday 19 July and invites all Portsmouth children to get reading and have a great time in their local library throughout the holidays. The scheme challenges children to read at least six books, collecting a wall chart and stickers as they go. All children completing the challenge will earn a medal, a certificate and an invitation to the exclusive winners' event at Southsea Castle on Saturday 20 September.
This free reading challenge is available from all Portsmouth libraries and children only need a library ticket to get started. Children of all ages can take part, either sharing their books with an adult or reading independently. They can choose what to read as well, perhaps reading books by a favourite author or choosing information books if they prefer.
All libraries are offering a range of free activities too, all on a sports theme. There is no need to be bored in the summer holidays - just check out your local library.
Lindy Elliott from the city council's library service said: "Becoming a Team Read winner this summer is a great way to celebrate the 2008 National Year of Reading. It helps children maintain and develop their reading skills and during a period in the year when there is no school work, they can really indulge the pleasure of reading for fun."
