Carers Centre moves to Orchard Road
Portsmouth’s 15,000 unpaid carers will be able to make use of new facilities next week when the new-look Carers Centre opens in Orchard Road, Southsea.
The Carers Centre has been based in Kingston Road for five years and has built up a great reputation for providing advice, information and support for carers of all ages, from children who help to look after siblings or parents who need support, to older people who look after a friend or loved one.
Councillor Leo Madden, Cabinet member for Health and Social Care, said: “The Carers Centre already provides a great service for the 15,000 people in Portsmouth who do such valuable work, looking after sick, elderly or disabled relative and friends. By moving our advice and support for carers into one building and providing new modern facilities, we will be able provide an even better service for this dedicated group of people.”
The move is happening to make space so that all the city’s carers will be able to get advice and information in a one-stop shop, and will have more room to meet and relax in a space that is dedicated to them.
The existing building will close on Friday 19 July, and the new Carers Centre will open in a recently refitted building in Orchard Road, Southsea, on Monday 22 July.
The new Carers Centre is already home to services for carers of people with mental health problems and the staff have been making space for their new colleagues to join them. As well as more space for small groups and one-to-one meetings with carers, the new centre also has a large newly refitted kitchen and a comfortable dining area where carers can relax over a cup of tea. There is also a large meeting room and a space where carers can use the internet.
The new Carers Centre can be found just off Goldsmith Avenue, on the corner of Orchard Road and Francis Avenue. For more information call the centre on 92851864.
