Students sign up to city action on Respect
Confidence, celebrating difference and respect are the themes of an event on Friday 4 July at Fratton Park when around 100 students from across Portsmouth team up for the sixth annual Student Voice Day.
Every school in the city has been invited to send two pupils along to the event, which includes young people highlighting improvements to their schools, how personal confidence can boost learning and why it is important to celebrate difference.
Some of the highlights of the day include the chance to sign Portsmouth Football Club's 'Respect' shirt and a tour of Fratton Park. The first Student Voice Day held in 2003 identified respect as one of the key priorities for students to focus on.
A range of different activities throughout the day will include 'Human Bingo' and lots of football themed activities.
Councillor Eleanor Scott, Executive member for Education, Children and Young People at Portsmouth City Council said: "Every school now has a way of involving young people and the Council of Portsmouth Schools (COPS) - which was only established four years ago - has already had a huge impact. This includes developments such as playground 'buddies', involvement in the appointment of staff and the introduction of outside spaces to learn, play and shelter.
"It is really important that young people have a say in issues affecting them, and their voices are heard. The event this week promises to be another excellent platform for young people to actively influence their schools and encourage participation in the student community
"The event is also a great opportunity to reflect more positive images of young people."
Students will also be able to explore why feeling valued helps them to learn, what makes their school unique, and why bringing unique talents together can help build effective teams
Organised by students and staff and supported by Portsmouth City Council the outcomes from the day will be taken back to the schools for action.
Portsmouth Football Club works in partnership with the Pompey Study Centre to improve students' educational achievements through football related learning.
