Free entry to Day-Day Museum on 13 July marks Veterans Day
To mark Veterans Day this year, there will be free entry for all visitors to Portsmouth's D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery on Sunday 13 July 2008. As well as the museum's normal exhibits, there will be new displays especially for the day.
The South Hampshire Area of the Military Vehicle Trust will be putting on a display of military vehicles outside the museum. Individual members of the group have spent many hours lovingly restoring these vehicles to their original condition and will be on hand to talk to visitors.
Inside the D-Day Museum, model makers from the Surface Warship Association will be mounting a display of highly detailed model ships. The largest on show will be a 6ft long model of the battleship H.M.S. Vanguard, which infamously ran aground across the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour in August 1960.
Other ship models on display will include HMS Royal Oak (sunk at Scapa Flow in the Orkneys in 1939), the German Second World War warship Prinz Eugen (which escorted the battleship Bismarck), and the Colony Class Cruiser HMS Gambia (served in the Pacific during the Second World War).
Councillor Terry Hall, Executive member for Culture and Leisure said: "The D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery is always fascinating to visit, and on Sunday 13 July there will be even more to see than usual. It really is a great opportunity to take advantage of this museum, which is one of the treasures of the city."
The Parachute Regiment Association Spectacular will also be taking place on Southsea Common on this day.
The national Veterans Day is on 27 June, and marks the contribution made to society by veterans from all conflicts. Many events are being held across the country in June and July to mark the day.
