Potential sports stars showcased in Street Athletics

Sporting stars Linford Christie and Darren Campbell are bringing Street Athletics 2008 to Fratton Park in Portsmouth on Tuesday 24 June as part of a national search to find the UK's best raw talent.

The Portsmouth Street Athletics event gives all budding sports stars the chance to race against each other over 60metres, with the top prize of competing in a Grand Final in Manchester and winning a year's kit contract with Reebok.

The ultimate aim is that young people from all areas are actively encouraged to take part, providing the opportunity to broaden their existing horizons both within sport as well as other related areas.

Linford Christie and Darren Campbell share the same vision - to break down the significant barriers which prevent youngsters from believing in their own talents and having the confidence in their futures to set even the smallest ambitions.

They said:"We believe that sport can play a huge part in engaging young people that reflects positively in other areas of their lives.

"You don't need anything to come and take part.... just a desire to get involved and realise your ambitions and dreams!
We'd love for you to come to Fratton Park on Tuesday and who knows, we may see you in the Grand Final which is taking place in Albert Square, Manchester in September."

As well as a year's kit sponsorship from Reebok, mentoring and training advice from both Linford and Darren is up for grabs to help the youngsters make the most of their sporting potential.

Simon Lindsey, city council Recreation Officer, said: "Sport is an important and positive aspect of many people's lives. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Portsmouth to showcase their talents and represent the city in a national event."

Now in its fourth year, Street Athletics sees thousands of young people taking part in races across the country. The project has grown enormously since it started on the streets with young people from housing estates challenging each other to race.

Nuff Respect are working with Positive Futures, Reebok, Sport England, Sony, Gaz de France and local councils to run Street Athletics events in various areas of the UK.

This year local music and dance acts are also being given the chance to show what they can do at each venue.

Simon Lindsey added: "As part of the nationwide Sony music and dance competition, come down to the Street Athletics event on 24 June where you'll have the chance to perform against other local acts in your area."

"Acts will be judged on the day and along with some top prizes from Sony for the best performers, they will then also travel on to the Street Athletics Finals in London and Manchester to perform alongside the best acts we find from every venue, in a search for the best talent in the country."

At the finals the winners will perform on stage in front of the crowd with the chance to scoop some even bigger Sony prizes for those who finish as the top three acts.
