A traditional Swedish Midsummer celebration is being staged in Portsmouth this weekend, complete with maypole dancing and scrumptious Scandinavian food and drink.
The breakfast team from Swedish radio station Rix FM is in Portsmouth to cover the start of the Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race on Saturday 21 June - a high octane event that is already attracting international attention.
With nearly 1 million listeneners, the opportunity to promote Portsmouth as a destination for Swedes proved an attractive proposition for Visit Britain, which has organised the Midsummer's Eve event at the Royal Maritime Club on Friday 20 June with a Maypole borrowed from St Swithun's school.
To celebrate the midsummer in traditional Swedish style there will be traditional songs, schnapps, beer and food The radio station team will also be welcomed with goodie bags full of local Hampshire produce.
Louise Rodwell, the city council's tourism officer, said: "We'd like any local Swedes or Scandinavians to get in touch to join in the celebrations with us this Friday. The powerboat race promises to be a fantastic event to watch and has certainly put Portsmouth in the spotlight. With a national and international audience, this is a brilliant way to promote the city and all it has to offer visitors."
