Council leader disappointed by refusal of new fire station plan

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson Portsmouth City Council leader Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson has expressed his disappointment that the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority has rejected a plan put forward by the council for a new sub-fire station on the site of Copnor's current fire station.

The plan, drawn up by council architects, was for a new purpose-built fire station along with rooms for community groups and offices for council community wardens.

Cllr Vernon-Jackson said: "This was a real opportunity for the fire service and the council to work together to give better protection for the people of the city. The council could have contributed towards the cost of the scheme, as council employees would have been based there.

"I'm disappointed that the fire authority has set its face against this compromise proposal and is going full steam ahead for the closure of Copnor fire station - the headquarters of the fire service in Portsmouth.

"It is clear to people in the city that Copnor fire station should remain. Maybe it is now time for fire services in Portsmouth to be run for, and by, the people of Portsmouth, and not to have decisions imposed upon us from outside the city."
