RE Loans Service launched for schools

City Museum An exciting new addition to the loans service for schools is being launched today (Wednesday 11 June) at Portsmouth's City Museum.

The RE Artefacts Loan Service is the brainchild of Year 4 Solent Junior teacher Georgina Mulhall, who has set up the new service in association with Portsmouth Museum & Records Service. Funded by Portsmouth SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education), the loans service consists of resource boxes to support the teaching of RE from reception to Year 6. Georgina Mulhall, an AST (Advanced Skills Teacher), has set up the boxes to be loaned to schools from September this year. SACRE members volunteered their time to help pack and catalogue the boxes during last month's half term holiday.

RE Managers from across the city and SACRE members have been invited to attend the launch at the City Museum on 11 June from 4 - 5.30pm so that they can see the range of resources that will be available. Portsmouth Museums and Records Service has agreed to house the resource boxes, and deliver and collect from schools as part of their existing loans service.

Georgina Mulhall said: "Children learn best from experiences. Artefacts help to provide children with valuable teaching and learning opportunities, for example through role play. Such experiences are key to children understanding religion".

"Many schools have limited funding for RE resources, so the RE Loans Service will enable schools to access quality resources at a very reasonable annual payment."

Bryony Kelly from the museums service added:" We have had a loans service for schools for over 40 years and this new addition is very welcome as it helps to broaden the resources that we can provide to enrich the learning of children in Portsmouth."
