Get your pet microchipped

Dogs at the city kennels Portsmouth's dog and cat owners are being given a special chance to get their pets fitted with identity microchips.

On Saturday 7 June,  Sunday 8 June and Saturday 28 June, between 9am and 11.30am, Portsmouth City Council's kennels in Regent Street, Mile End, will be open for owners to drop in with their pets.

Cllr Jason Fazackarley, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "Normally this is only done by appointment, but we want to encourage all dog and cat owners to get their pets microchipped.

"A microchip contains all the information that kennels staff or other animal welfare workers need to identify a lost pet and reunite it with its owner. They can read the information with a special scanner. And in the case of an accident, being able to identify an animal can lessen the distress people feel.

"Microchips are tiny and the procedure is usually quick and painless. It only costs £11, which is a very reasonable price to pay for peace of mind.

"I would encourage caring owners to get along to one of these sessions if they possibly can, or make an appointment at the kennels at another time.

"Owners who have moved or changed phone numbers can come and have the details on their pets' microchips updated."

If owners can't make it to a drop-in session, then they can make an appointment by calling the city helpdesk on 9283 4092.
