The Lord Mayor's appeal
Last updated: 21 December 2011 14:47Project Outline
As part of her year as Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, which began in May 2011, Cllr Cheryl Buggy is embracing an idea that raises aspirations, focuses on young people, celebrates success and showcases the city in a positive light.
After consultation and conversations with many key figures and organisations in the city, a project under the banner of Positively Portsmouth, called Passport to Success was launched.
200 Year-9 pupils from all 14 secondary schools in the city have been selected to take part in the scheme. Supported by team leaders and business mentors from organisations such as The Southern Co-operative and The Listening Company, these pupils are now undertaking a series of challenges designed to build confidence, raise aspirations and make them more aware of the career opportunities available in Portsmouth.
The project has been designed to benefit not just the pupils, but the community as a whole. With this in mind, two of the key challenges require the pupils to complete ten hours of volunteering for a local cause, as well as undertaking a fundraising initiative for one of these eight Portsmouth-based charities:
-
Age UK Portsmouth
-
Enable Ability
-
Faith & Football
-
Hilsea Lido
-
Home-Start Portsmouth
-
Keep a Child Alive
-
Mary Rose Trust
-
Portsmouth Friends of the Earth Association
All participants will receive tangible accreditation for their completed passports, including the team leaders. There will also be a number of special prizes for outstanding performances.
At the end of the mayoral year in May 2012, the legacy will be a successfully evaluated pilot, a blue print for the concept to continue and funding in place.
