Protecting our city from tidal flooding

Flood sign How can we reduce the risk of tidal flooding to Portsea Island?

With climate change expected to cause rising sea levels, that question is a crucial one for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth City Council has come up with ways we can maintain and improve our coastal defences and protect the city for the next 100 years.

Our sea defences are adequate for today's conditions. But climate change is likely to cause higher seas, more extreme weather and pressure on wildlife sites. Some sea defences will need to be strengthened or extended, and perhaps made higher.

The council is seeking the views of local residents and organisations on the plans.

So on Monday 28 April it is holding a public exhibition on coastal protection at the Members' Room in The Guildhall, from 3pm to 8pm.

Maps will show flood risks to each area of Portsea Island, and proposals for tackling those risks will be outlined. Coastal protection experts will be on hand.

The aim is to inform the public and encourage people to make their views known. The council will consider all views before going to the Environment Agency and the government for approval and funding for the plans.

For more information, and a leaflet outlining the plans, residents can:
