April news
Shooting for the reading stars
Pompey goalie David James will present ten lucky Premier League 'Reading Stars' (PLRS) aged 14 and 15 with certificates to mark their achievements at Fratton Park on Thursday 24 April at 6pm.
Pupils at Redwood Park School for children with physical and learning disabilities, the Reading Stars have made great headway with their reading and literacy - with the help of a footballing theme. Further encouragement came in the form of fantastic giveaways from the Football Premiership and the 'Reading the Game' project including pens, football shirts, footballs, and sticker albums. Popular football author Tom Palmer also visited and worked with the group, sharing stories, quizzes and competitions in addition to practising their goal scoring skills.
Along with their parents and carers plus two groups from Hampshire libraries, the children will receive books worth £15 from Waterstones as well as their certificates on 24 April.
Lindy Elliott from the library service said: "This is a great opportunity for the pupils to share the fun and benefits of Premier League Reading Stars. Children in Portsmouth have been involved in the project for the last five years, ever since Pompey was promoted to the Premiership. To meet David James is a dream come true for them and an amazing reward for their efforts."
