Drive to get more people to join their local library
Families are being encouraged to become members of their local library for national 'Join a Library Day' on Saturday 26 April.
The campaign includes a joining form published in the Daily Mirror on Friday 25 April for people to take to their library. The children's newspaper First News will also be publishing the form that week.
In Portsmouth all the libraries are gearing up to receive the applications and will be ready to welcome new members of all ages with a specially prepared joining pack. For children there will also be free copies of the Ultimate Book Guide, packed with reading ideas and inspiration to ensure that new joiners make the most of their library card.
This project will kick start Portsmouth's own "Big Library Join" which will be encouraging library membership through the summer and into the autumn.
Lindy Elliott from the library service said: "Joining the library and using the book and information services is free - and is a great service for everyone who lives, works or studies in the city.
"For children, belonging to the library is a brilliant way of encouraging a lifelong love of books and reading. Adults can borrow up to 30 items and children 20, so there's lots of good reasons to make the most of your local library."
