It's Museums Mayhem in May
May 2008 - see events listing below for more details
Museums in Portsmouth are joining a national campaign to celebrate Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) with exciting events and activities for all the family.
With the promise of 'Museum Mayhem' in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight throughout May, the aim is to encourage more people to visit their local museums and galleries and raise awareness of what's on offer.
The theme of this year's annual campaign is ideas and innovation, with the city council's museums service hosting an exclusive, atmospheric viewing of Nick Park's Oscar® winning animation 'The Wrong Trousers' and clips from Aardman's Shaun the Sheep on Sunday 18 May from 10am to 5.30pm.
During half term, families will be asked to create their own innovation at the City Museum and Records Office -- a den. Drop by and help installation artist Jill Goodwin create one, or simply experience the dens yourself.
From Tuesday 27 May to Thursday 29 May, from 10am -- 12pm and 2pm - 4pm
Children visiting Portsmouth museums during May will each receive a free pack of Top That! Trading cards, containing exciting information about some of the items in the city's collections. Children can build up their collection of cards by visiting more museums in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the month.
The Museum Mayhem website will also have trails to download, linking museums across the region based on themes such as natural history and geology, transport, military history and old stuff! Look out for Portsmouth's museums in these trails.
Bryony Kelly from the museums service said: "We're sure that children will enjoy collecting the Top That! Trading cards and hope the publicity campaign will encourage people to visit a museum during the month of May. The range of activities and events now being planned is wide ranging and there really is something for everyone!"

The campaign is supported by South West Trains - visit www.museummayhem.co.uk
The website will have information about all the museums taking part and links to their sites. It will also host the museums trails and after May the Top That! cards will be available to download for free.
