The 1975 film "Overlord" will be shown at No.6 Cinema at 7pm on Tuesday 22 April.
"Overlord" won its director, Stuart Cooper, the top prize at the 1975 Berlin Film Festival. It was shot by Stanley Kubrick's Oscar-winning director of photography John Alcott, whose other films include "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining".
The film tells the personal story of a young man during the Second World War, from his army basic training to taking part in the 1944 D-Day landings. 30% of the film uses real archive footage that was shot during the Second World War, and is now held in the archives of the Imperial War Museum. Vintage lenses and film stock were used in making the rest of the film, so that the wartime and new footage were seemlessly blended together. "Overlord" has long been a cult classic that was not publicly available until its recent re-release.
Stanley Kubrick said of this film: "The only thing wrong with 'Overlord' is it’s an hour and a half too short!" - the film is 1 hour 28 minutes long.
The film will be introduced by Andrew Whitmarsh, Curator of Portsmouth’s D-Day Museum.
