A walk along Southsea seafront: photographs by Garrick Palmer, 1970 - 2008

The Hot Walls New exhibition marks triumphal conclusion of 30 year project.

Portsmouth photographer's work showcased at City Museum and Records Office.

See the seafront through fresh eyes!

A fascinating new exhibition showcasing the work of local photographer Garrick Palmer and his dramatic pictures spanning nearly four decades of Southsea's seafront, opens on Saturday 29 March at the City Museum and Records Office.

A walk along Portsmouth seafront:  photographs by Garrick Palmer, 1970-2008 is the culmination of over 30 years of photographing the seafront throughout the year and in all weathers.  One of local artist and photographer Garrick Palmer's favourite places, the seafront has been the subject of his pictures  since the 1970s, when he first turned to photography to express his view of the world.

John Stedman, local history officer said: "Taking a camera with him whenever he visits, what Garrick Palmer photographed was largely unplanned, depending on where along the three miles he parked his car, whether he walked east or west, the weather and above all the people and scenes he chanced across - whatever attracted the eye of an experienced artist.

"The result has been a wonderful collection of striking images, recording the development over the last four decades of the seafront - one of the most important and popular districts of the city.

"The exhibition is an opportunity to see the front in a quirky and idiosyncratic way, from the viewpoint of one of the district's most distinguished artists."

Once the exhibition is over the photographs will be added to the museum and records service's collections so the public can have access to them in the future, and the exhibition can be re-staged.

Generous support from Arts Council England of almost £3,700 means that the exhibition will be accompanied by a series of camera-related activities for families, and by lectures and workshops for young and more experienced photographers.

A walk along Portsmouth seafront:  photographs by Garrick Palmer, 1970-2008 opens at the City Museum and Records Office, Museum Rd, Portsmouth, on Saturday 29 March and is open daily 10.00 - 5.00 until 8 June 2008.  Free admission and free parking in the museum grounds.
