Biography
Gerald Vernon-Jackson has been a councillor in Portsmouth since 2003 and has been Leader of the Council since 2004. He represents Milton and Eastney in Southsea.
He has overall responsibility for the co-ordination and presentation of council policy and is the main spokesperson for the city council. He chairs the Cabinet meetings which make decisions about most city council decisions and takes a particular role in the building of the council’s budget each year.
Gerald Vernon-Jackson is also Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Local Government in England and Wales, at the Local Government Association and serves on the National Executive. He is also national lead for the Liberal Democrats at the Improvement and Development Agency where he is involved in getting advice to councils across the UK on how to improve their services and their decision making.
Gerald Vernon-Jackson also serves on several outside bodies. He is Vice-Chair of the Partnership of Urban South Hampshire, the organisation which brings together all the councils in southern Hampshire. He is a Trustee of the New Theatre Royal and Milton Friendly Society Homes.
Gerald Vernon-Jackson was born and brought up in Hampshire and has both a BA and MSc degrees. He has worked for several local councils as well as for himself. He worked for David Rendel, MP and for the Liberal Democrats nationally. In the past he has also worked for the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, for the Leadership Centre for Local Government and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
Gerald Vernon-Jackson is a member of the National Executive of the Liberal Democrats.
