PlasterboardLast updated: 10 April 2012 13:52 UK
At the Portsmouth Recycling CentreThe Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA) states that plasterboard is not classified as household waste and as such we are not obliged to accept this type of waste at the recycling centre.
However, we will accept plasterboard waste from small-scale, household, DIY projects at the Portsmouth Recycling Centre as a discretionary service to help residents. This is limited to no more than 6 bags (90 litres) or an equivalent car-boot full per month.
You will need to consider an alternative method of disposal if you have a larger quantity of plasterboard, such as a skip or grab bag from a reputable company.
All HWRCs have a dedicated storage container for plasterboard as it must be segregated from other waste types. On arrival at the site, please seek assistance from site staff who will be able to direct you.
As with other DIY waste, plasterboard is not classified as household waste. Hampshire County Council does however recognise that households may produce small quantities, and so will accept small incidental off-cuts arising from minor DIY projects only. Householders with a larger volume of plasterboard to dispose of will need to contact an alternative specialist waste company.
If you pay anyone to undertake renovations or other work within your home or garden and they remove the rubbish for you, or someone else removes the rubbish for you, either paid or unpaid, it is your responsibility to ensure that they have the appropriate licences to do this, such as a waste carriers licence. This is known as a Duty of Care. If the person removing the rubbish proceeds to fly-tip the waste you could be liable for a fine of up to £5,000, so check with the environment agency before you allow that ‘man and a van’ to take away your rubbish.
Alternative Disposal Options
To dispose of larger amounts, or materials, not accepted at the Portsmouth Recycling Centre, you may like to make use of a list of alternative disposal options.
