HMS Endurance
HMS Endurance is the Royal Navy's Ice Patrol Vessel. She deploys each year in the autumn from her base port here in Portsmouth to Antarctica, where she carries out operational duties on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Antarctic Survey and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. HMS Endurance is the only ship in the Royal Navy affiliated to Portsmouth.
The HMS Endurance tracking project is a Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 Geography, Science and Citizenship National Curriculum supporting project. The project contains other information such as the historical link with Ernest Shackleton's Endurance and the only information available on what happened to Shackleton's crew after they were rescued from Elephant Island. George Marston, Shackleton's official artist on his Endurance adventure, was born in Southsea.
Due to rudder failure, HMS Endurance had to leave Antarctica early and was not able to support National Science Week this year. Discussions are now being held about HMS Endurance taking part in 2007's National Science Week.
