Management of Hilsea Lines
The Hilsea Lines Ranger, Ron Dooler, is responsible for the day-to-day care and protection of the Hilsea Lines Conservation Area and it’s wildlife habitats. He is based at one of the casemates of Bastion 3, Scott Road in Hilsea.
The long-term aims of the Ranger and Portsmouth City Council are documented in the Management Plan, which has evolved over many years. Guidelines for the Development of Hilsea Lines were prepared by a multi-disciplinary working party of council officers in February 1986. The subsequent Management Plan presented proposals for the longer term restoration, enhancement and maintenance strategy of Hilsea Lines and the surrounding open space. This plan was intended to meet those requirements – however most of this was not implemented due to lack of funds.
The following updated 1997 Management Plan was intended to reflect current and potential use of the site and realistic budget expectations.
Substantial restoration works were made to Hilsea Lines in 2001-02 as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project. The majority of these works can be seen in the areas of Bastions 1, Bastion 3 and their surrounding areas and have returned them to their original appearance. There are also interpretation boards situated all along the Lines that help highlight walks and areas of interest to ensure visitors can benefit from the significance of this site.
