Ponds and Lakes

Within the parks and open spaces of Portsmouth there are six significant sites, which the Parks Service manage, with pond and lakes that are openly accessible to the public :

1.  Hilsea Lines
Seawater, freshwater and brackish water moats set within a large area of woodland separating Portsea Island from the mainland, home to a wide range of wildlife

2.  Great Salterns Pond
Set on the edge of Great Salterns Field is a small pond that is maintained and cared for by Great Salterns Preservation Society

3.  Baffins Pond
Set within parks and gardens for the local neighbourhood, this pond has benefitted from a lot of community work over the past ten years

4.  Tamworth Pond
Also within a neighbourhood park, this pond is a valuable local amenity and wildlife habitat

5.  Milton Lakes
Milton Common is a large area of reclaimed land that is a valued site for nature conservation. There are three lakes here running adjacent to Langstone Harbour

6.  Canoe Lake
Located along Southsea seafront, is a popular small lake that is visited by many residents, visitors and wildlife such as swans

There is also a significant 300 acre site at Farlington Marshes, that became the first nature reserve to come under Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s care when it was leased from Portsmouth City Council in 1962. The site was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1985 and forms part of the Langstone Harbour Conservation Area.
