Portsmouth Tree Scheme
Trees are one of the most striking and recognisable features of the landscape. Yet the tree population in Britain has been in decline for many years now, due to new roads, installation of utilities and housing developments. Portsmouth itself suffered great loss with Dutch Elm Disease in the 70’s and the great storms blowing vast numbers down in 1987 and 1990.
The Portsmouth Tree Scheme was introduced to enable everyone to participate in actively improving the city’s environment by sponsoring the planting of trees for present and future generations.
Who can sponsor a tree?
Anyone from an individual to a company can sponsor tree planting. Many people like to commemorate a special occasion or a recent bereavement using this scheme. Some people may also wish to subscribe to this scheme in their own lifetime as opposed to money being spent on floral tributes.
Cost
There is no maximum limit to the amount you donate, but we do ask for a minimum donation of £60 for planting a tree in amenity areas such as a park or open space.
Commemorative plaques
Unfortunately we are unable to offer these as they are prone to vandalism and are considered a Health and Safety hazard.
Where can I have the tree planted?
We cannot guarantee to plant trees exactly where you want, but the application form will allow you to specify your ideal choice of site. Once your application is received, we will investigate whether the site is appropriate, or if not, suggest the nearest alternative. Thanks to many donations, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable space in certain parks.
Which species will be planted?
The species will be recommended by the Arboricultural Officer, who’s professional knowledge will choose a tree with optimum chance of survival.
When is the best time?
For the trees to have optimum chance of survival, planting is usually undertaken from November to March. Therefore any application received between January and September can be planted in the same year. Any application received between October and December would probably not be planted until the following year. Once a tree is planted it will be maintained by the city council.
Can I donate a tree?
Unfortunately we are unable to accept donations as we have to ensure that all newly planted trees are healthy specimens that are free of disease.
