Portsmouth has a remarkable record in Britain in Bloom and Southern England in Bloom.  Below are some of the awards achieved in recent years :

1994 Runner-up - Large Large City (Southern England), Best Park in South, Best Floral Design

1995 Finalist - Inner City, Best Landscaping Award

1996 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Best Floral Design, Best Anti-litter Initiative, Chairman's Award - Portsdown Hill

1997 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Best Treatment of Roadsides and Verges

1998 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Best Park - Southsea Seafront, Highly recommended recycling centre

1999 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Best Park - Victoria Park, Best Tree Planting, Best Floral Design, Best Commercial Landscape

2000 Winner - Inner City (National), Winner - Large City (Southern England)

2001 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Agenda 21 Award - Port Solent recycling, Best Treatment of Roadsides and Verges

2002 Runner-up - Large City (Southern England), Best Environmental Initiative

2004 Silver - City (Southern England), Best Public Park (Silver) - Victoria Park, Environmental Management Award - Portsdown Hill

Judges have been consistently impressed with:

Floral Displays

• overall display at The Dell
• bedding displays particularly along the seafront
• colourful barrier baskets at Portsmouth Station
• bedding to commemorate D-Day at the war memorial

Permanent Landscaping

• range of interesting trees at Victoria Park
• Rose Garden at the seafront
• impressive Phoenix palms at Palmerston Road
• very good standard of maintenance seen at the bowls and sports grounds

Environmental

• Baffins Pond project and the enthusiastic band of volunteers
• Salisbury Road allotments recycling schemes
• re-introduction of grazing and the volunteers work at Portsdown Hill

Cleanliness

• overall cleanliness of the city
• Community Warden scheme
• absence of dog fouling
• volunteers who litter pick Portsdown Hill

Victoria Park was described as "a fine old Victorian Park in the centre of the city in which many of the old features remain. There is an aviary fully stocked with birds including peacocks, a bandstand, water-fountain and a very interesting tree-trail with many fine specimens on show".
