Successful bid from the European Union to support a 3 year initiative
We have been successful in securing a grant from the European Union to support a 3 year initiative with the young people of Portsmouth and Caen City Council, our twin town.
The objectives of the project are:
- to support Portsmouth primary schools with the introduction of compulsory foreign languages for Key Stage 2 with opportunities to work with French schools
- to develop knowledge and understanding of the cultures of each others cities through an exploration of heritage and culture
- to stimulate longer term school exchanges between Caen and Portsmouth
- to pilot new ways of cross authority working to support the wider aims of the UK City of Culture bid and a rejuvenation of the Caen:Portsmouth twinning link
Outline of the project:
- initially 7 Portsmouth schools are involved in the project and they are developing a portfolio with their twin school in Caen
- once these portfolios are submitted they will be judged by a jury both in Portsmouth and Caen, in Portsmouth the French Ambassador has been invited to be part of this jury and likewise in Caen the British Ambassador has been invited
The successful 'winning' schools will have an opportunity to send 30 pupils for a Discovery Week in each other's cities before the project evaluates and expands for delivery in years 2 and 3.
