Allotments
Last updated: 12 April 2012 15:55 UKWhere are they?
There are 8 allotment sites within the city of Portsmouth and 1 in Rowlands Castle. The allotment site in Milton is historically divided into three (Milton Piece, Eastney Lake and Hope Cottage) but in reality is one site with a single waiting list. The sites are all of different sizes ranging from 8 to nearly 500 plots, with shop, shed and toilet facilities at many of the sites.

Why have an allotment?
Whether you want to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers or herbs, there are many benefits to having your own allotment:
- Pleasure of seeing what you sow grow to maturity
- Exercise and a healthier lifestyle
- Fresh air, peace and quiet
- Opportunity to meet new friends
- Eat your own fresh and organic produce
How large is a plot?
With effect from July 2009, plot sizes have now changed and the standard plot will be 3 rods for any new lettings. A 3 rod plot is approximately 75m2 and if managed well will supply ample crops. This will not affect existing allotment holders.
How much will it cost?
Rental costs for an allotment are very modest and based on the size of the individual plot. A 3 rod plot works out at £18.66 annually or £11.64 if you are over 60. If you are a Leisure Card holder you will receive a substantial discount (on the full adult cost) to an annual cost of £11.19. All prices inclusive of VAT.
Is there a waiting list?
There is a waiting list for all of our sites. The length of time you may need to wait is dependant on the total number of plots available at your chosen site, but we will try to give you an idea when you first enquire.
How do I rent an allotment?
You can telephone us on (023) 9268 8070, print the application form at the bottom of the page or email us at allotments@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
When you are offered a plot you will be required to sign a simple tenancy agreement, which sets out your rights and responsibilities. You will be expected to keep your plot cultivated and tidy. Before you take on a plot, why not visit your chosen site one Sunday morning, a popular time when other plot-holders will be around to help with advice or answer any questions you may have.
