Conservation Area 16 - St Mary's Churchyard

St Marys from the south east The Church of St Mary is a neo-perpendicular construction with a lofty "East Anglian" style west tower containing battlements and pinnacles. It is faced in flint with stone dressings and towers above the surroundings. The church was the first recorded church site on Portsea Island and forms the nucleus of Fratton.

Fratton was one of the earliest settlements on Portsea Island and retained a generally rural character until the middle of the 19th century.
