Copy certificates - Birth, Death and Marriage
Last updated: 27 March 2013 11:55 UKIf you wish to obtain a copy certificate for a birth, marriage or death that occured within the City of Portsmouth you can apply in person at Portsmouth Register Office, by post or over the telephone. (Please see our contact details at the bottom of this page).
You will need to provide the following information:
· The type of certificate you are seeking: birth, marriage or death
· The name or names the certificate applies to
· The date of the event
· The place of the event
· Any other relevant information that may help us to locate the certificate
· A stamped addressed envelope would be appreciated
You can use the form available below, please print the application form and post it to us or bring it to the Register Office with the required fee.
There are two types of birth certificate. The standard birth certificate shows your full name, date and place of birth, parents' full names and occupations. Please note that for a passport application you will now need a standard birth certificate. A short birth certificate is also available. This shows your full name, sex, date of birth and registration district of birth.
Certificates Fees from the 1st April 2013:
We cannot issue a certificate until we have received payment. For events that have occurred recently a reduced fee may apply.
We offer two services for obtaining a copy certificate. Our standard service is £10.00 per certificate. Your certificate will either be ready for you to collect from Portsmouth Register Office in 5 working days or we will post it out to you using Royal Mail second class post in 5 working days.
Our Priority service is £20.00 per certificate. Your certificate will be ready for you to collect within 24 hours from Portsmouth Register Office or will be posted out to you using Royal Mail first class post within 24 hours. Please note that with our Priority Service you are paying £10.00 for your certificate and £10.00 for the priority search and issue of your certificate within 24 hours, therefore if we cannot find the entry that you wish to purchase a certificate for we will only refund the £10.00 certificate fee.
Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to Portsmouth City Council.
Overseas applicants are asked to send a cheque drawn in Pounds Sterling currency.
