Incinerator, Quartremaine Road

This information sheet describes the background to the development of the Incinerator at Quartremaine Road.

The original incinerator was opened in the early 1970s and ran until 1991, when it was closed due to the cost of meeting the new environmental standards established by the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

By the late 1990s Hampshire had a limited supply of available landfill space (environmentally acceptable new landfill sites being difficult to find), and no
MRF Incinerator active incinerators that would reduce the amount of material for landfill.
