HM Naval Base

Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy, playing a vital role in the defence of the realm. During the 18th & 19th centuries, the Dockyard was one of the largest industrial complexes in the world. Wars during the 18th century brought prosperity to the city and a gradual enlarging of the dockyard.

In the 20th century the naval base drew related business to Portsmouth and large multi-national defence companies are currently well represented.
