Eastney Barracks

This factsheet looks at the history of the former Eastney Royal Marine Barracks site and outlines the changes leading to its development into a residential area.

The Barracks site includes Scheduled Ancient Monuments, Listed Buildings and is itself a Conservation Area.  It is an unusual Conservation Area as the centrepiece is not so much the buildings, but the relationship of the buildings to the open Parade Ground.

The site is flanked by two forts - Eastney Fort West and East which were once connected by a covered walkway.  These are Scheduled Ancient Monuments including the tunnel between them and the boundary wall surrounding the site.
