Continental Ferry Port
The Continental Ferry Port has been a success since it first opened for business in 1976 and is now the second largest passenger ferry terminal in Britain, only Dover handles more passengers. The idea of a ferry terminal in Portsmouth could not be considered until the early 1970s, due to poor road access onto Portsea Island, the resistance of the Royal Navy to additional movements in Portsmouth Harbour, and Southampton having an established ferry terminal with all the communication links and facilities required by the Ferry Companies.
