City Centre

This factsheet outlines the changes that have taken place in the City Centre over the last fifty years. Separate information sheets are available covering Cascades and the Tricorn.

Portsmouth City Centre is a sub-regional centre supporting and benefiting from the City's role as a tourist centre. As the principal shopping centre serving Portsmouth and South-East Hampshire it has an estimated catchment of approximately 500,000 people and supports up to 10,000 jobs. The area is well served by public transport including Portsmouth & Southsea railway station and major bus interchanges at either end of Commercial Road.

Commercial Road, Arundel Street and The Cascades form the core retail area, with office space clustered around the railway. At the southern end of the City Centre, Victoria Park, the Guildhall and Guildhall Walk, with its bars, restaurants and the Theatre Royal, form an “entertainment quarter”.
