Bridge Centre, Fratton
In 1975, an Interim Policy Plan to deal with urgent land use matters was produced. This included a major planning application by Portsea Island Mutual Cooperative Society Ltd (PIMCO). The Co-operative Department Store was seen as key in attracting shoppers to the area, but the store needed to adapt to changing trends and increased competition from other shopping centres.PIMCO stated that they were interested in a major shopping redevelopment scheme based on their land holding to provide new floorspace in the centre.
The Bridge Centre, as it is known today, was an amended form of the retail and car parking scheme granted permission in 1986. It was subject to a legal agreement under Section 278 of the Highways Act 1986 in respect of the proposed access road to the development and the link with Somers Road North from Holbrook Road. It was granted planning permission with the signed legal agreement on 17 February 1988.
