Supplementary Planning Guidance (SGN) No 6 - Southsea Shopping Centre
Guidelines for the improvement of buildings
The Southsea shopping centre developed in the last century, initially with shop frontages added to existing houses and then with the building of purpose built shops. The shopping area grew to include the roads surrounding Palmerston Road.
The central part of the shopping area was destroyed by war time bombing but the surrounding area largely survived. The northern section of Palmerston Road was rebuilt in the 1950s, and became a pedestrian precinct in the 1970s.
These guidelines examine some of the visual problems which have developed, and suggest ways to help consolidate the current situation and encourage improvements in the future.
