Historic items can add considerably to the visual interest of the city for example:
Portsmouth retains many areas and items that are of historic or visual interest and this has been recognised by the listing of many items by the Department of Culture Media and Sport.
Portsmouth has operated a number of 'unwritten' policies on various issues such as paving, lighting and the colours of street furniture. Some of these items attract little public notice, but in other cases they can be very controversial e.g. replacement of 'Portsmouth' style lamp columns.
This booklet sets out the standards that are expected with regard to paving, lighting etc in respect of new development in conservation areas and adjacent listed buildings.
Maps for each Conservation Area have been excluded from this version of the booklet, but are available from the Conservation Guidelines page.
