Local List
Many older buildings are included in the Statutory List or are in Conservation Areas.
There are many buildings and structures of visual interest not protected because they do not meet national criteria, but they do add interest to the character and variety of Portsmouth. Schools, churches, public houses (particularly from the victorian and edwardian periods) all contribute interest and variety to the streetscape and are often landmarks in areas of terraced housing. Many of these are in parts of the city such as North End, Fratton or Milton which have very few protected buildings.
To help highlight and protect these buildings of local interest, a Local List has been prepared. A policy concerning buildings of local interest has been included in the Portsmouth City Local Plan. The Local List includes 267 entries referring to about 500 addresses.
