Nationally important sites and monuments are given legal protection by being placed on a list or "schedule", which is maintained by English Heritage. This schedule has been kept since 1882, when the first Ancient Monuments Act came into force. Application for work to an Ancient Monument must be made to English Heritage.

There are many types of Ancient Monuments:

earthworks
medieval castles and abbeys
industrial structures
defensive structures as recent as World War II

Many Naval & Military structures were formerly scheduled rather than listed in order to keep the system of control within national government. This practice no longer applies and many structures in Portsmouth have been added to the Statutory List (Listed Buildings) and de-scheduled from the Ancient Monuments list.
