Conservation Area 17 - Eastney Barracks (being prepared)

archway and clocktower The Eastney Barracks Conservation Area was designated in 1973.  This conservation area is unusual in the way that it is not just the buildings which are of importance, but also the relationship of these buildings to the open parade ground.  The Royal Marine Barracks were built between 1862 and 1870

The site is flanked by two forts - Eastney Fort West and East which were connected by a covered way.  These are scheduled ancient monuments, including the tunnel between them and the boundary wall surrounding the site.  The Officers' Mess, Main Barrack block, Officers' Quarters and Water Tower are Grade II listed buildings.
