Portsmouth air quality

All local authorities in the UK are required to review and assess air quality according to the timetable set in the National Air Quality Strategy. This process is carried out under the Local Air Quality Management regime that provides a platform for working towards achieving the National Air Quality Objectives.
In order to meet our statutory obligations, we carry out a periodic review and assessments of Portsmouth ambient air through according to DEFRA's prescribed guidance. This is based on a combination of monitoring and detailed dispersion modelling at known air pollution hotspots for several years now.
Following the 2004 local air quality Detailed Assessment, 13 areas which were predicted to exceed the annual nitrogen dioxide National Air Quality Objective (NAQO) were identified. These areas were declared as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in 2005.
Following the 2009 local air quality Further Assessment, 8 out of the 13 AQMAs were predicted to meet the NAQO. These AQMAs were revoked in 2010:
- Revoked AQMAs are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13.
- Retained AQMAs are 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12.
