Alcohol Interventions Team

Alcohol can have a harmful effect on both mental and physical health both short and long term. Alcohol can cause people to become violent and aggressive, or to take risks that they wouldn’t normally think twice of when sober.

Who we are

The Alcohol Interventions Team (AIT) offers support, information, advice and signposting to individuals who drink above 'safe' levels of alcohol for whatever reason.

We can take referrals from a range of services, and aim to arrange appointments in a location that is accessible for the individual, such as their nearest GP surgery (subject to participation) or health/community centre.

Alcohol interventions can include the following:

  • screening levels of alcohol use with a short questionnaire. Are you a sensible, hazardous, harmful, or possibly dependent drinker?
  • information, advice, and education about alcohol, units and safe drinking
  • some sessions of Solution Focused Brief Therapy
  • signposting to other relevant local services where appropriate
  • support into specialist substance misuse services, where appropriate

Is this service for me?

Please contact us if you:

  • feel that you are drinking more than you would like to. Perhaps your drinking has increased recently, or increases in certain situations?
  • feel that the amount you are drinking is affecting your physical and/or mental health
  • have found yourself in a risky or dangerous situation after drinking alcohol or been injured as a result of drinking
  • would like more information about local services available to you
  • have any questions about alcohol issues - perhaps for yourself or someone else you are concerned about

How to get in touch

We can take referrals from anyone, such as health or social care professionals, friends or relatives, as long as the person wishes to be referred. Individuals may also self-refer into the service. All appointments will be arranged with the individual.

Please discuss this with your GP or contact the team directly on 023 9284 1753 or email AIT@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to make an appointment with one of the us, or to ask any questions you have about the service.
