If you become homeless
Last updated: 08 June 2009 15:24 UKIf you're in danger of losing your home it's important that you tell us as soon as possible. We'll deal with any enquiries as sympathetically as possible to prevent further distress.
We will:
- give you advice on your legal rights which may prevent losing your home
- suggest ways you could resolve your problems
- provide you and your family with another home, which may only be for a temporary period
What is homelessness?
You're homeless if you don't have a home that you can legally occupy. You're not homeless if:
- you can legally stay in your home
- there's a second home which is available to you
You may be homeless if you have a home, but can't live there for certain reasons:
- you've been evicted illegally from it
- it's not reasonable for you to stay in your present home, due to domestic violence or threats of violence against you or a member of your family
Prevention of homelessness
Our aim is to help prevent your homelessness. We can offer help such as debt counselling or negotiations with landlords to prevent or delay the loss of your home.
Please contact us as soon as your landlord, bank or building society threatens repossession action. If you lose your home due to rent or mortgage arrears, which could have been avoided, you may be considered to be intentionally homeless.
If we're unable to prevent your homelessness, we can give you advice regarding other housing options that maybe available to you through the private sector
