The ink cartridges can be recylced and reused, often by charities who will sell them back to the manufacturer, raising funds in the process. Many organisations will send you a freepost envelope to return the cartridge in.
Think about donating your old computer to one of the organisations below, and they will find it a new home rather than being sent to a landfill site, especially if it is still in working order and you are just updating your system.
Donate a PC - This is a free matchmaking service for individuals and organisations to donate un-needed hardware (.i.e computers, printers etc) to UK charities, non-profit organisations and educational establishments. It is primarily for those with only one ot two items to donate and /or who can not use a suitable recycling organisation
Jamie's Computer Club - This is a learning and training project run by Southampton homelessness charity. They collect computer equipment from households and organisations all over Hampshire, preventing it from going to land-fill. It is then refurbished by homeless and vulnerably-housed people, providing learning and training opportunities
