Travel Plan Initiatives Fund
In 2008 grants of up to £5,000 match funding were offered to encourage workers to use their cars less.
PLEASE NOTE: the closing date for 2008 / 09 was September 15 2008. Funds have for 2008 have been awarded to:
- BVT surface fleet
- Dstl
- Interserve (on behalf of Port Solent)
- Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust
- Portsmouth NHS Hospitals Trust
- SSE
The cash, from Portsmouth City Council, was aimed at boosting the numbers of people who get to work by walking, cycling or using public transport – cutting CO2 emissions and congestion.
The money was available to any local company or organisation that has developed a travel plan – a strategy for greener travel. The money was for a specific project, and the applicant had to match the grant with an equal amount.
The cash could be used for projects such as:
- installing secure parking, changing facilities and lockers for cyclists
- improving on-site footpaths, security or lighting for walkers
- helping public transport users – for example, with special kerbs or on-site bus stop facilities
- encouraging car-sharing – for example, with car-share parking bays
- building facilities for motorcyclists
- setting up a system of pool bicycles with trailers
- adult cycle training
Amanda Morris, the council’s travel plan officer, said: Lots of companies want to be greener and help their staff to do their bit too.
“Having a properly thought-out travel plan is a great way of reducing emissions and adding benefits for employees.
”These grants will help a lot of companies take the plunge and make some real changes on their premises.”
- Travel plans can:
- improve recruitment and retention
- improve efficiency – less is time wasted on late arrivals/deliveries
- improve a firm’s environmental image and record
- improve a firm’s relationship with the local community
- reduce business mileage
- reduce fleet management costs
- reduce sickness rates – walkers and cyclists are healthier
- reduce demand for on-site parking
“This money will really help local companies tackle climate change and make it easier for their staff to travel without cars.”
The money comes from the government, as part of funding for the council’s local transport plan.

Priority will go to organisations that have an established travel plan and are members of SignPOST, the Portsmouth forum for sustainable travel. Organisations that have developed a travel plan independently of the council can register it when they apply for a grant. However organisations that have a travel plan as a result of planning permissions are not eligible to apply.
