Wishing for a change? If you want to have fun learning a new hobby, expand your social circle, discover new skills or improve existing ones, The Learning Place, our high quality adult learning centre, and Pride in Pompey, our learning and training centre, has something for you.
The Learning Place
The Learning Place has fully equipped classrooms, two IT suites, a newly refurbished kitchen, a crèche, garden, courtyard, lift and disabled access. All our facilities reflect our commitment to lifelong learning for Portsmouth residents.
What courses do you offer?
Art, craft, cookery, computing, music, yoga, IT, internet shopping, languages - there's just so much choice. You can learn how to use the internet, get the most out of your digital camera or camcorder, discover social media like Facebook or eBay, or learn to use software such as spreadsheets and word processors. If you've never used a computer before we have courses especially for you.
Our art and craft courses include flower design, drawing, painting, printmaking, jewellery making, card making and fabric embellishment. You can also learn a new language or brush up an existing one - we offer French, Spanish and Italian.
What if I'm not academic or creative?
Why not take advantage of a great chance to relax, unwind, and improve your wellbeing? We offer courses in yoga, handmade beauty products, Indian head massage, healthy living and guitar lessons as well as courses in maths and English (including English for speakers of other languages) and employability skills.
How much does it cost?
Many of our courses are free of charge as they are subsidised by the Skills Funding Agency and Portsmouth City Council. English, maths and most of the computer courses are free. Where there is a fee it includes all the materials or equipment you need - for example, our cookery courses include all the ingredients so you don't have to buy them. There are concessions for learners who receive a means tested benefit.
Community support courses
We run courses for people who have disabilities, mental health needs, or who may be homeless, unemployed or from a minority background.
Many of these courses take place in local community centres, so access to learning is easy and convenient, and many can be delivered on site, providing there is a suitable space to work in. We can create tailor made courses to suit particular groups or interests.
We work in partnership with many organisations in Portsmouth and would be pleased to hear from you if you think we could help you. If we can't help you ourselves, we'll be pleased to put you in contact with one of the organisations who work with us.
