Portsmouth Educational Psychology Service

Who are we

Portsmouth Educational Psychology Service is in the Children, Families and Learning Directorate within Portsmouth City Council and we are part of the Children and Young People's Wellbeing and Targeted Services.

There are eight Educational Psychologists working in Portsmouth.  We are all experienced teachers, with an Undergraduate Degree in Psychology and a Post Graduate Degree in Educational Psychology.  It takes a minimum of seven years to qualify as an Educational Psychologist.

What are the key purposes and aims of the service

The key purpose of the service is to promote the learning, social and emotional development of children and young people (aged 0-19) through the application of psychology.

In order to help children and young people reach their full potential we will work with the young person themselves, with their parents or carers, with their teachers and support staff and in partnership with other agencies.

In striving to achieve our aims we are guided by these key values:

  • The wellbeing of the child is paramount: we are child advocates.
  • Psychological research and evidence underpins our practice; we are committed to personal and professional development.
  • The importance of collaborative work with families, schools, partner agencies and the voluntary sector.
  • A commitment to equal opportunities and non-discriminatory practice.
  • All people can learn, all people can change.

What do we do

We work on behalf of children and offer a range of services to schools, pre-school settings, and other agencies, including:

  • consultation
  • assessment
  • advice
  • training
  • programme planning
  • monitoring, review, evaluation
  • therapeutic intervention
  • research

The best and most authoritative source of information about the training route to becoming an EP is on the British Psychological Society's website. On the right hand side of this is a link to the pages dealing specifically with educational psychology which answer questions about entry requirements, locations of the training courses, funding issues and application procedures.

If you use that as a starting point you should be able to find answers to everything you are asking about.
