Ensembles

At the Portsmouth Music Centre many opportunities now exist for young musicians to play or sing together in an ensemble most suited to their ability. Currently all groups are free and led by Directors who each have a great deal of experience in their particular field.

Musicians who attend schools or colleges both within the City of Portsmouth and from further afield are eligible to join any of the ensembles listed at the bottom of this page.

The approximate standard for each group is also listed, however, it is not necessary to have passed a music exam to join any of the ensembles. For the more senior groups such as the Youth Orchestra an audition may be required.

The application form can be returned to the address below at any time of the year and an effort will be made to find a place in the requested ensemble.

Lessons

Instrument lessons are offered free of charge to those still in full time education and who are residents of Portsmouth and some instruments are also available. The range of lessons currently on offer are:

  • bassoon
  • cello
  • double bass
  • french horn
  • oboe

For further information about any activities at the Centre or to request an application form telephone 023 9231 5815 or email: Maria.Spacey@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. The form can also be used to book lessons.
