The Portsmouth History Centre is on the second floor of Portsmouth Central Library and comprises:

- Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens collections.
Here's useful information for visitors to the Portsmouth History Centre:
- opening hours - same as central library. Contact us & scroll down to libraries for the opening hours
- accessiblity - the History Centre is accessible to wheelchair users with a lift to the second floor
- café - drinks and food are available in the third floor cafe
- toilets - on second and third floors.

Using the Portsmouth History Centre
Visitors are asked to comply with the following to protect our collections:
|Tickets||You will be asked to sign the visitors' book. We are members of the CARN registration scheme. You can use CARN tickets from other record offices here. We can issue tickets, but we need to see proof of your name and address, such as a driving licence or utility bill. Day tickets can also be obtained.|
|Lockers||Visitors are asked to leave their bags in the lockers provided before going into the History Centre|
|Pencils||Only pencils may be used in the History Centre. Ink blots and biro marks will never come off!|
|Photographs||Ask the staff on duty if you would like to photograph a document. They will give you a form to complete.|
|Photocopies||Please ask the staff on duty, because photocopying is at the staff's discretion if the condition of the item and copyright regulations permit. Staff will also explain the scale of charges.|
|Microfilm readers or genealogy computers||To book either microfilm readers or genealogy computers, phone 023 9268 8046|
City Records Office
Items are stored both at the History Centre and off-site. Documents stored at the History Centre are produced Monday to Friday: 9.30-noon and 1.30-4.45pm, and between 10am-3pm on Saturdays.
Off-site items should be requested in advance. Request a document by 2pm, and it will be ready for you 9am the next morning. To see a document on a Saturday or Monday, please request it by 2pm on Thursday.
