Portsmouth Literature Quiz 2010
Last updated: 17 March 2010 11:57 UK
This exciting event is run each year by the School Library Service, and is fast becoming one of the highlights of our Reading Events calendar. Each year pupils from schools across the city meet to show off their knowledge of books and enthusiasm for reading, hoping to win the coveted trophy for their school. Quiz rounds include General Knowledge, Visual clues, Portsmouth Book Award shortlisted books, and Guest Authors, so that teams can prepare for some sections of the Quiz in advance.
The authors whose books are included in the Guest Author round also take part in the Quiz, and sign books bought by pupils at the Bookshop. Winners of individual rounds can also spend their book token prizes at the Bookshop, which is run during the event by The Hayling Island Bookshop.
Secondary School Literature Quiz 2010
After the original date for the Secondary Quiz was 'snowed off', a swift rearrangement saw 24 teams of Year 7 and 8 pupils from six schools arrive at Fratton Park on February 26th. Charter Academy, Mayfield, King Richard, Priory, St. Edmund's and Springfield Schools all fielded teams of four pupils each. Also in attendance were guest authors Craig Simpson, Andy Briggs and a very excited Ali Sparkes, who had just won the 'Book I Couldn't Put Down' category of the Blue Peter Book Award for "Frozen In Time", one of the books on the Quiz list!
After several rounds of fierce competition, one of the two teams from St. Edmund's School emerged victorious - a hat-trick for the school, as this was their third consecutive victory in the Secondary Quiz! A well-earned Second and Third place went to the two teams from Springfield School.
Congratulations to all the teams who spent so much time preparing for the Quiz - it is always fantastic to see the sheer enthusiasm for reading that exists in our local schools!
Primary School Literature Quiz 2010
The second annual Literature Quiz for pupils in Years 5 and 6 kicked off at Fratton Park on March 9th, with an excited buzz as over 120 children waited to see who would return to school with the trophy. Guest authors for the morning were Michael Coleman, Andrew Norriss, Sara Starbuck and Ali Sparkes, now confirmed as the overall winner of the Blue Peter Book Award and proudly sporting the badge to prove it!
After several hotly-contested rounds, including one eight-way tie, the winners were announced in reverse order. This resulted in huge celebrations for St. Swithun's Primary, who had managed to take both First and Second place, with Third place going to Wimborne Junior. Overall the standard was extremely high, with 16 of the 32 teams finishing within 10 points of the winners.
Congratulations to all the pupils who took part - their high scores are a testament to the love of reading in local schools, and they were also wonderful ambassadors for their schools.
