Portsmouth Literature Quiz 2010

The Literature Quiz in 2010 will once again feature separate events for Year 7/8 pupils in Secondary Schools and Year 5/6 pupils in Primary Schools. Information packs have been sent to schools who can now begin to prepare for the events in February and March 2010 respectively.

The venue will be the Victory Lounge at Fratton Park and we are grateful for the outstanding support by some top children’s authors. The secondary school Quiz will be attended by Andy Briggs, Ali Sparkes, Craig Simpson and Lee Weatherly. The primary school Quiz will be attended by Michael Coleman, Andrew Norriss, Ali Sparkes and Sara Starbuck. The opportunity for children to rub shoulders with children’s authors is a significant part of this event and our guest authors will prove hugely popular visitors, as in the past. Portsmouth Literature Quiz 2009 for Year 5/6

In 2009 the Portsmouth Literature Quiz (PLQ) was extended so that it involved Year 5/6 pupils, as well as the Year 7/8 pupils.

The Year 5/6 Quiz took place in March 2009 and there were 35 teams representing 21 different schools. Pupils were amazingly knowledgeable and well read and in round after round teams were scoring highly impressive marks. After two hours and amid great excitement there was a tie for first place. The teams from Court Lane Junior School and Corpus Christi Primary had to take part in a “sudden death” play off to decide the destination of the trophy and it was Corpus Christi Primary School who prevailed. The Corpus Christi Primary School team of  four are pictured above, together with their reserve.

There were also book token prizes for many other teams:

• Winners: Corpus Christi Primary School
• Runners up: Court Lane Junior School
• 3rd place: Meon Junior School
• Joint 4th: St John’s Primary School
• Joint 4th: Wimborne Junior School

The quiz was supported by four guest authors who were present throughout the morning, speaking to children and signing books.
The packed Victory Suite at Fratton Park was an ideal venue for this event.

Portsmouth Literature Quiz 2009 for Year 7 8

The Year 7/8 Quiz  took place in  February 2009 and for the second successive year St Edmund’s School triumphed. Their team of four was made up of different pupils this time but the result was the same and so both the 2008 and 2009 Portsmouth Literature Quiz trophies are held at the Catholic Secondary School!

• Winners:  St Edmund’s School
• Runners up: Priory School
• 3rd place: Springfield  School

There were 23 teams taking part from seven local secondary schools.

Visiting authors played a  full part in the afternoon and Craig Simpson and Ali Sparkes signed endless autographs and chatted to children about their books.
